What Would Jesus Do?
Ever ask yourself that question? You come across a situation, and you find yourself asking, “what would Jesus do?”. In most cases, all we need to do to answer that question is to refer to the New Testament. There, we can read what He had done in certain situations, or He tells us through His word.
When I think about how Jesus would want us to worship the Father, I find myself asking, “what would Jesus do?” Today, the majority of Christians worship on the first day of the week, while a minority worships on the seventh day of the week. There are many web sites that will give their reason for each, some referring only to the bible, some using man’s interpretation of the scripture, and others simply espousing their own opinions. So, who is right and whom do you trust? This is a good place to ask yourself, “What Would Jesus Do?”
To answer this question, we abandon the teachings of others we have learned, the interpretations of man, and any material not contained in the word of God, the Bible. We look at the New Testament at the life of Jesus for our answer. We find in Mark 6:2, "And when the sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing him were astonished, saying, From whence hath this man these things? and what wisdom is this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands?" Here, we find that Jesus would go into the synagogue and teach on the Sabbath.
And in Luke 4:16, "And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read,” we learn further that going to the synagogue on the Sabbath was His custom. Further on in the same book at Luke 4:31, "And (Jesus) came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath days.", shows us again that the Sabbath was the day Jesus would go to the synagogue. Luke also tells us in Luke 6:6, "And it came to pass also on another sabbath, that he entered into the synagogue and taught: and there was a man whose right hand was withered." and again in Luke 13:10, "And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath."
From this we have learned that Jesus had a custom of going into the synagogue to read and teach on the Sabbath day. No other day does the scripture say anything about Jesus going into the synagogue and reading or teaching there. So then, when would be the Sabbath? The first reference we find of the “Sabbath” is in the book of Exodus, chapter 16, where the Hebrews are instructed to gather the mana that God would provide for them Exodus 16:26, "Six days ye shall gather it; but on the seventh day, which is the sabbath, in it there shall be none." And, again, in reference to the gathering of the mana, Exodus 16:29-30, "See, for that the LORD hath given you the sabbath, therefore he giveth you on the sixth day the bread of two days; abide ye every man in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day. So the people rested on the seventh day." Then, in Exodus 20:8-11, "Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it."
Jesus kept the seventh day Sabbath, and He gave us this reason to remember, John 8:29, "And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.” We also find in Mark 2:27-28, "And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath: Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the Sabbath." Here, Jesus claims Lordship of this day, as it is His day, and therefore referred to as the Lord’s Day in Revelation 1:10-11, "I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet, Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last:"
Some believe that the Sabbath was nailed to the cross with Jesus and thereby done away with. But the Lord speaks of the Sabbath in the new earth, which is to come, which He will make, and says shall remain, as shown in Isaiah 66:22-23, "For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the LORD, so shall your seed and your name remain. And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD." According to this scripture, the Sabbath will be kept in New Jerusalem, after his coming. Jesus kept it in His day and will continue it in the new earth. And since He says that all flesh will come to worship before Him from one Sabbath to another, it is still a day of worship. The conclusion is inevitable: the Sabbath was, the Sabbath is, the Sabbath will be.
From the book of Exodus, we have learned that the “Sabbath” is the seventh day of the week or Saturday as it is known today. We learned that the Sabbath is also a Holy day, as commanded by God. His reason given to us for its Holiness is “For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it." Therefore the Sabbath, the seventh day (Saturday) is Holy because He (God) rested the seventh day, He (God) blessed the seventh day and He (God) hallowed the seventh day. There is no scripture in the Bible where God had done this for any other day, nor transferred the sanctity of this day to any other day. Therefore, it must be that the Sabbath remains a day of rest till today, as we find stated in Hebrews 4:4-11, "For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works. And in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest. Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief: Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts. For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day. There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief."
